Unambiguous languages exhaust the index hierarchy

چکیده

This work is a study of the expressive power of unambiguity in the case of infinite trees. An automaton is called unambiguous if it has at most one accepting run on every input, the language of such an automaton is called an unambiguous language. It is known that not every regular language of infinite trees is unambiguous. Except that, very little is known about which regular tree languages are unambiguous. This paper answers the question whether unambiguous languages are of bounded complexity among all regular tree languages. The notion of complexity is the canonical one, called the (parity or Rabin-Mostowski) index hierarchy. The answer is negative, as exhibited by a family of examples of unambiguous languages the cannot be recognised by any alternating parity tree automata of bounded range of priorities. Hardness of the given examples is based on the theory of signatures in parity games, previously studied by Walukiewicz. This theory is further developed here to construct canonical signatures. The technical core of the article is a parity game that compares signatures of a given pair of parity games (without an increase in the index).

On Unambiguous Regular Tree Languages of Index (0, 2)

Unambiguous automata are usually seen as a natural class of automata in-between deterministic and nondeterministic ones. We show that in case of infinite tree languages, the unambiguous ones are topologically far more complicated than the deterministic ones. We do so by providing operations that generate a family (Abα)α<φ2(0) of unambiguous automata such that: 1. It respects the strict Wadge or...

On the Hierarchy of Block Deterministic Languages

A regular language is k-lookahead deterministic (resp. k-block deterministic) if it is specified by a k-lookahead deterministic (resp. k-block deterministic) regular expression. These two subclasses of regular languages have been respectively introduced by Han and Wood (k-lookahead determinism) and by Giammarresi et al. (k-block determinism) as a possible extension of one-unambiguous languages ...

Unambiguous Tree Languages Are Topologically Harder Than Deterministic Ones

The paper gives an example of a tree language G that is recognised by an unambiguous parity automaton and is Σ1-complete (analytic-complete) as a set in Cantor space. This already shows that the unambiguous languages are topologically more complex than the deterministic ones, that are all in Π1. Using set G as a building block we construct an unambiguous language that is topologically harder th...

Ja n 20 14 Unambiguous Büchi is weak

A non-deterministic automaton running on infinite trees is unambiguous if it has at most one accepting run on every tree. The class of languages recognisable by unambiguous tree automata is still not well-understood. In particular, decidability of the problem whether a given language is recognisable by some unambiguous automaton is open. Moreover, there are no known upper bounds on the descript...

On Recognizable Tree Languages Beyond the Borel Hierarchy

We investigate the topological complexity of non Borel recognizable tree languages with regard to the difference hierarchy of analytic sets. We show that, for each integer n ≥ 1, there is a Dωn(Σ 1 1)-complete tree language Ln accepted by a (non deterministic) Muller tree automaton. On the other hand, we prove that a tree language accepted by an unambiguous Büchi tree automaton must be Borel. T...
